sightseeing

We've been singing the praises of Chicago to our out-of-town friends for years. One of the things about Chicago that makes it special is the beautiful architecture. The Chicago Architecture Foundation runs some fantastic tours for the visitor and the native alike. What's even better is that you can enjoy yourself either in a boat or on foot. The boat tour is a nice leisurely ride down the Chicago River which begins and ends in the heart of downtown. The walking tours are given all over the city. For something downtown we recommend the Downtown Deco tour, Greater N. Michigan tour or the Streeterville Walk. Take a look at the Chicago Architecture Foundation web site to find a tour that fits your taste.

To take a full look at the city, visit the John Hancock Observatory located at the top of the very tall John Hancock building. Of course the tallest building in Chicago, the Sears Tower, also offers a great view but is little farther away.

Another great way to spend the day outdoors is to go for a relaxing walk along the lake or visit Chicago's Navy Pier. The Pier offers shopping, dining, nice short boat rides out into the lake for a unique view of the Chicago skyline and even a Ferris wheel and old fashion carousel for kids (or those young at heart). Navy Pier is fun both during the day and in the evening.

museums

Chicago museums are great. The Chicago Museum Campus is a beautiful area located just downtown, on the lake, and hosts the Field Museum of Natural History, the Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium. The museum campus is also one of the best places to enjoy a sunny day outdoors. Of course one of Chicago's greatest museums is the Art Institute of Chicago, also located downtown.

theatre

While early fall is somewhat of a slow time for Chicago theater, there are some fun shows around town that will be worth checking out. What could be more fun than seeing the live version of Chicago while in the windy city, itself? "Chicago" will be playing throughout September at the Shubert Theatre.

If comedy better fits your mood, check out Chicago’s famous Second City for some great entertainment.

If you are a native of Chicago you should check out the Strawdog Theatre, when their new season starts in November.

shopping

Michigan Avenue is the place to shop in Chicago and it is only a short walk from the Newberry and the downtown hotels. You can start at Watertower Place and make your way up the magnificent mile. Just ask someone to point you in the right direction.
